Research Activities #
Willem’s research explores the intersection of technology and human behavior. The first case he examined was Formula E, because of the various ways in which digital technologies were used (e.g., eSports, Virtual Reality, FanBoost). This also led to the development of a framework on hybrid sport configurations, from digitally supported to digitally translated. His recent work focuses on digitalization in sports such as gymnastics and skateboarding, examining the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies for fan engagement and athlete development. Other current work is at the intersection of diversity and inclusion and digital fan engagement. Finally, since 2022, Willem has been a (co-)chair of track that focuses on Digitalization of Sports (including Virtual Sports) and that is part of the European Conference on Information Systems.
Teaching Activities #
Willem develops and delivers courses on business strategy, management, and marketing. In addition to traditional lectures, he utilizes innovative teaching methods such as case studies to provide students with a practical understanding of the latest trends in digital transformation. To appeal to students, his teaching cases explore the digital strategies of leading organizations in the sports industry such as the Royal Belgian Football Association and the Drone Racing League.
